Rebuild in New Orleans' Lower 9th Ward This is the very neighborhood being rebuilt by Brad Pitt's Make It Right Foundation. GCW invites you to join us for a week or more in the Lower Ninth Ward this winter! We will be working with New Orleans’ residents, helping to rebuild a home and assisting with other work organized by NENA, the Ninth Ward’s neighborhood association. Those with building skills welcomed, as well as those willing to learn and work hard! To find out more, sign up HERE and our volunteer coordinator will contact you shortly. |

Our Current New Orleans House Project With many months spent cutting thru red tape, it's been a very long time in the making...now, join us as we embark on a new homebuilding project for a family in New Orleans' Ninth Ward! We've gotten a foundation laid, and now we need you to help build a house and rebuild a family's way of life. Click HERE now to fill out our volunteer roster sign-up (no obligation, but a first step to joining our team). The property owner is Linda J and family, whose home was completely destoyed by the flooding of the Lower Ninth. A lifelong community leader, Linda has worked tirelessly as a grassroots neighborhood organizer in the lower Ninth Ward ever since Katrina hit, helping hundreds of others recover from the devastation. Rather than attending to her needs, she and her children have lived with friends in Slidell (35 miles from New Orleans)...so it's time to help her get some of her life back. This house will be a modest single-floor two bedroom home built from the ground up, one of the first of its kind in this slowly recovering neighborhood. It will be seen as both a model approach for others to emulate and an anchor property to stimulate additional enterprise in the immediate area. We have the skilled support of the design studio at NENA, along with site management support and locally hired foundation and systems contractors, but we'll need lots of volunteer help from start to finish. While strong building skills are not a requirement, volunteers with experience in the trades are highly prized and desparately needed. Work has begun, and a detailed (though very approximate) project timeline is available HERE. |
